OCLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) – Quite the honor for a local high schooler with a rough upbringing. LaShawn Samuel has been accepted to 12 colleges, including The Ohio State University, and some are even offering full scholarships.

LaShawn has spent the past few years walking over a mile to and from the library in Franklinton to get help with his homework.

He grew up in poverty, and in a troubled neighborhood. His home has been broken into multiple times, and he witnessed his close friend get shot and killed. He’s also had to overcome numerous health challenges.

LaShawn overcame all of these hardships and says hard work really pays off.

“Be true to yourself and accomplish your goals as long as you put your mind to it,” said LaShawn.

He has decided to go to The Ohio State University, and he’s been admitted into the business program.

LaShawn says one day he wants to help others with a similar background.
