The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has expressed concern over the spate at which Universities in Ghana have deviated from their core mandate of producing what he describes as employable graduates.

Contributing to a debate on the proposed formula for the distribution of GETFund for this year, the Tamale South MP, called for a realignment of tertiary education to suit Ghana’s developmental needs.

“All the universities are departing from their core mandate and vision and we continue to produce persons who are not employable and fit for our purpose. We should project into the future to find out what our manpower needs are. The world is drifting towards science and innovation and we are still interested in producing more persons in social science and marketing.”

48% Ghanaian youth jobless – World Bank

In 2016, the World Bank in a report on jobs in Ghana revealed that about 48 percent of the youth in the country, who are between 15-24 years do not have jobs.

The report dubbed the “Landscape of Jobs in Ghana,” explored the opportunities for youth inclusion in Ghana’s labour market.

“In Ghana, youth are less likely than adults to be working: in 2012, about 52% of people aged 15-24 were employed (compared to about 90% for the 25-64 population), a third were in school, 14% were inactive and 4% were unemployed actively looking for jobs.”

It recommended that the government must work towards equipping the youth with relevant skills through the educational system.

The government in a bid to address this challenge introduced the Nation Builders’ Corps programme under which government says it has employed 100, 000 graduates in various modules for a period of three years.

President Nana Akufo-Addo in October commissioned over 100,000 beneficiaries under the NABCO modules which included Feed Ghana, Educate Ghana, Revenue Ghana, Heal Ghana, Enterprise Ghana, Digitise Ghana and Governance Ghana.
